The archaeology of Cuba in the historical period begins October 28, 1492. Developing nations must first evolve as a culture and a society before they begin to recognize the importance of their place in the global community. In 1938, the Office of the Historian was created in Cuba and the restoration of over 1000 national monuments began. This, of course, is a work in progress. An amount of work which may never end. For the Cubans, This is not a reason to pursue the preservation and conservation of their heritage. Cuba is home to 9 World Heritage sites comprising 1% of the total sites designated by UNESCO. Find out why the world is fascinated by the Cuban culture.
Phil Alldritt is an instructor of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of New Mexico-Taos since 2000. Since 1999, he has been working and doing research in Cuba as an archaeologist and tour guide. He has a Master's Degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Arizona and has been traveling and guiding in Latin America since 1979.
