DESTINATION: We will visit a landscape of ghosts, including the spectacular scenery of the Black Range, the Aldo Leopold Wilderness, and a restricted area of the White Sands Missile Range. When Mexico ceded the southwest to the United States in 1848 the Chiricahua Apache, among them the Warm Springs Apache, struggled heroically to preserve their centuries-old way of life from incursions from miners, ranchers, farmers, as well as the US military sent to protect them. The Warm Springs Apache were ultimately forced onto reservations in Oklahoma, where their descendants live today. We will explore the scenes of this conflict: the ancestral homeland of the Chihende (Red People), or Warm Springs band of the Chiricahua, including visits to a major battlefield site, the Battle of Hembrillo Basin, and the remains of the mining towns and camps that displaced the Apache and then themselves were abandoned.
