TAS Day Trip to Bandelier

  • 08 May 2008
  • 8:30 AM
  • Meet at BLM parking lot on Cruz Alta if carpooling, or at Bandelier at 10 AM

The trip is entitled "Rarely Seen Cavates" and will be led by Rory Gauthier, the Archaeologist for Bandelier.   We will meet at the entrance to the park at 10:00 a.m.

We will visit two sites not normally open to the general public:  Specifics on these sites are provided by Rory Gauthier, as follows:

1.    Group M is the best preserved cavate in Frijoles Canyon.   One can see walls of talus pueblos and plastered surfaces.  This is a short walk but a little steep, less than one quarter of a mile.

2.    Two pueblos dating to the Coalition period and several Classic period field houses which show the evolution of the settlement in the Bandelier area.  This is about one mile round trip.

All TAS travelers should bring hats, water, sun screen and a box lunch: the usual for a day trip to an archaeological site.

All travelers should bring their Golden Passports.   Each car will need a Golden Passport to enter the park without a fee.   Any car without a Golden Passport will be charged $12.00.  If we meet at the Ranchos post office by 8:30am, we can carpool to arrive at the entrance to Bandelier by 10:00.  All travelers who have not signed a TAS release form will be asked to do so on the morning of the day trip.
